Bair Island Secret Passage

Bair Island Secret Passage

We kayaked out of the Redwood City public launch ramp, turned right at the ship channel and then turned left into Corkscrew Slough. This "secret passage" from Corkscrew Slough out to SF Bay is documented in Roger Schumann's "Sea Kayaking Central and Northern California." Bair Island is part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The first time we tried to find this passage last year, we got lost. This time I programmed the passage entrance into my GPS. By the time we got into the passage, which is straight as an arrow and bears 005 degrees magnetic, the wind was really whipping up out on SF Bay. My partner mutinied a little ways into the passage, so I paddled up a bit to see how bad it really looked. You can't really tell from this video because the GoPro was in WIDE mode, but the Bay was looking really nasty. You can see the chop increasing the closer I got to the Bay. I turned around and we retraced our route back to the launch ramp.
