When Cruising Goes Wrong 🚢 by Travel Writer & Cruise Ship Enrichment Speaker David Nikel ⚓
Winter cruises can be magical. They can also be unpredictable.
On this January Northern Lights cruise to Norway aboard Fred Olsen's Borealis, not everything went to plan. We faced severe weather, itinerary changes, missed ports, and some of the roughest seas I’ve personally experienced. In the end, we visited just two ports on a ten-night cruise.
This video is an honest look at what can happen on a winter cruise, how situations like this are handled at sea, and why flexibility matters when travelling in Northern Norway at this time of year.
Along the way, I share:
- What led to the itinerary changes
- How rough weather affects cruise planning and safety
- What happens onboard when ports are cancelled
- Why missed ports are costly for cruise lines
And what you should realistically expect if you’re considering a winter cruise to Norway.
If you’re thinking about booking a winter cruise, especially one focused on the northern lights, this video is designed to help you go in informed, prepared, and with the right mindset.
