Follow a group of students from the Australian International School, Kuala Lumpur, as they take part in a one-week marine biology and scuba diving field trip in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
For most students, this is their first diving experience as they complete the entry-level PADI Open Water Diver course, beginning the week as non-divers and leaving with real confidence, strong in-water skills and a genuine connection to the ocean. Students who already hold diving certifications continue their development through Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver programmes depending on their previous experience level.
Beyond dive training, the field trip focuses heavily on marine conservation and ocean education. Students learn how to conduct reef surveys using underwater transects and video-guided marine studies before taking part in underwater clean-ups, beach clean-ups and coral planting activities.
One of the highlights of the programme is the underwater art dive, where students demonstrate excellent buoyancy control, comfort underwater and growing confidence while creating artwork on canvas beneath the surface.
This annual educational expedition is fully planned, created, hosted and conducted by Downbelow Adventures and Downbelow Marine & Wildlife Adventures a PADI CDC (Career Development Centre) based inside the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park in Sabah, Borneo.
The programme combines adventure, marine science, conservation awareness and practical dive training into a unique educational experience designed to inspire the next generation of ocean advocates while building teamwork, responsibility and personal confidence.
The educational and marine conservation components of the programme are personally supported and conducted by the Downbelow Adventures leadership team, combining decades of diving, expedition and marine education experience into a real-world field learning environment.
